Happiness is often described as a state of wellbeing that includes positive emotions, life satisfaction, and a sense that life is meaningful and worthwhile.
This month serves as a reminder that happiness happens one small moment at a time, encouraging us to recognise and appreciate those moments in our everyday lives.
Research suggests that happiness is influenced by factors such as:
✅ Strong relationships and social connections
✅ Having purpose and meaning
✅ A positive mindset and emotional awareness
✅ Healthy habits and taking time to savour positive experiences
In Dorset, the Office for National Statistics estimated happiness levels at 7.5 out of 10 in 2022/23. While this provides a positive snapshot, we also know that wellbeing challenges remain. More than 147,000 people (18%) in Dorset have a recorded diagnosis of depression, rising to 22% in the most deprived communities.
At DiiS, data helps us understand both the strengths and challenges across our population. These insights support informed decision-making and help organisations focus efforts where they can have the greatest impact on health and wellbeing.
This Happiness Happens Month, let’s take a moment to acknowledge the small things that contribute to our wellbeing and support those around us to do the same.
