Innovation Unit and The Health Foundation are holding a public webinar on Thursday 11 December 2025, to launch the findings from the national Accelerating Innovation Systems initiate.

About the event:

How can ICBs use their role as strategic commissioners to accelerate the adoption and spread of high-impact, evidence-based innovations – that improve population health, reduce health inequalities and increase value for money?

ICBs have been called to act as “pioneers of reform”, taking lead responsibility for driving ‘the three shifts’, working closely with partners across local health and care and the wider innovation ecosystem. The Health Foundation commissioned Innovation Unit to work with nine ICBs – and their partner Health Innovation Networks – to explore the roles that ICBs have been playing to support innovation adoption, and how they can best leverage their changing roles as system leaders and strategic commissioners moving forwards.

As the programme concludes, this event will share insights and learning on:

– How ICBs can embed innovation adoption throughout strategic commissioning

– The role of effective strategic partnerships with Health Innovation Networks

– How ICBs have been achieving this in practice through real-life case studies

Speakers:

As part of the session we’ll be hearing from Richard Watson, the National Programme Director for Strategic Commissioning at NHS England, as well as being an ICB Deputy Chief Executive and Executive Director of Strategy and Transformation.
