A new dedicated care home for specialist nursing and dementia in Poole will be officially handed over by the contractors to BCP Council and Shaw healthcare next week (Monday 19 August).
Staff from Shaw healthcare, the operators of the new 80-bed home, Figbury Lodge, are making preparations to start accepting the first clients from next month, providing high quality care and accommodation.
The development of Figbury Lodge at Mitchell Rd, Poole, has provided a boost to local recruitment with more than 100 staff employed, with 17 of those employed living locally in Canford Heath.
The construction of the care home has been completed by lead contractor, Stepnell with around 90% of the contracted work on site awarded to local trade.
The new home features:
- Four accommodation wings incorporating various communal areas.
- 80 beds with private bathroom facilities.
- A multi-purpose room for activities and events.
- Separate dining rooms, lounges and quiet spaces.
- Large fully landscaped courtyard garden with outdoor seating and a seaside themed garden area
- Pitch and putt, a hobby shed and raised planting beds.
- a community hub and facilities which will be accessible to members of the wider community.
- A hairdressing salon and shop.
- A giant chess board.
The home will offer enhanced support and facilities to Poole residents, including rehabilitation with clients accepted on a referral basis by the NHS and the Council.
Councillor Lesley Dedman, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Adult Social Care and Health, said: “It is fantastic to see the completion of Poole’s first Council-owned care home. This new state-of-the art facility offers much-needed nursing, dementia and rehabilitation care for local people, particularly those who are unable to fund their own care.”
Geraint Evans, Commercial & Development Director for Shaw healthcare commented: “We are extremely proud to be working with BCP Council and look forward to delivering high-quality, specialist and sustainable care services to the residents of Figbury Lodge, which will be a welcome addition to the care services Shaw currently provides across three Extra Care schemes in Poole. Figbury Lodge provides state of the art accommodation that will enable residents to enjoy the best possible quality of life. Shaw has developed a number of local authority agreements over recent years and the opening of Figbury Lodge expands our care services in the region.”
Rob Speirs, Regional Director at Stepnell, said: “We are delighted to have completed the build and to be able to hand over Figbury Lodge to BCP Council and Shaw Healthcare. There is a real need for good quality, affordable care homes within the region and this facility delivers 80 much-needed suites for those needing both nursing and specialist dementia care.
“This project was built with the residents at the forefront, and we believe this facility will create not just a home for them, but a sense of community as well.”
Karen Stratford from NHS Dorset CCG said “In Dorset, over 10,000 people are living with dementia; and with the local population set to increase over the coming years this number is likely to grow along with demand on dementia care, so the CCG and other local health partners welcome the development of the new home as it will help people with the condition get the care and support they need.”
